Day of my birth
"So how old are you turning?" coworker asked yesterday. "Ugh. Twenty-three." " Really? I thought you were one of the seventeen-year-olds. I thought you'd be turning eighteen! Wow!" "Huh. Yeah. I'm twenty-two." "Believe me, when you're my age, when you're thirty-two, you'll want to look that young." "Hmm." Yeah, seriously. I do not believe that anyone over the age of 18, even 32-year-olds, want to look seventeen. Youngish, sure, but not seventeen.
"So what are your plans?" Javier asked today. "Well I didn't have any, but I think I'm gonna go home and get drunk." "Awesome!" "Aww, I'm pregnant. I can't drink," said a female coworker. "And I've got another kid so it's never okay." She looked too young to have one kid and another one on the way. But on second thought, I thought she might be 25 or so, and all in all I decided not to say anything.
I will probably not get drunk but do some reading with some hot cocoa, maybe. It's snowing in Tennessee, the roads are icing up, school's canceled, and though the main roads are salted, it's not a good time for going out. The temperature's about 25°, and I have the complete Sherlock Holmes collection from the library, which I am rapidly finishing. (I'm reading "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Sign of the Four" right now.) It's a good day, and I'm twenty-three. |

POLITICAL STUPIDITY IS HARD TO EXCUSE
Of all the Political mistakes I have seen in my life, the dumbest political move I have ever witnessed in my life was done by Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson in December, 2009. I understand and even admire politicians who take a stand against their party because of strong policy beliefs and then explain these beliefs to the voters of their State. The voters will either agree with these beliefs and re-elect them, or disagree and elect their opponent. When the politician takes this stand, however, he should at the very least be smart enough to know and understand what he is doing and he should believe that most of the voters in his state believe as he does, hope that he can change their mind, or start lookin for other employment. It wasn't until I read this Freemont Tribune article about a Ben Nelson town hall meeting over the Christmas break that I realized Ben Nelson didn't understand what he was doing and didn't realize that he wasn't taking sides in the debate, but was making both sides mad at him. Just read this quote from Ben Nelson when questioned about the poll showing that 50% of the Democrats in his state didn't like the Senate Health care bill: “The poll showed that 50 percent are Democrats that didn’t support the plan,” he said. “That’s hard to believe, that’s really hard to believe. It might be possible but it just doesn’t seem quite right. I don’t really give a lot of credibility to that particular poll." Look now at the recent poll numbers of Joe Lieberman in Connecticut. He, like Nelson, was able to make both the Republicans and the Democrats dislike him. When will Southern Senators learn that trying to please everyone is impossible. It will only cause both sides to dislike you. Since I don't believe that either Joe Lieberman or Ben Nelson took the positions they took because of strong policy beliefs, I can only conclude that they did what they did because they are Stupid. If you run as a Democrat then vote like a Democrat. Don't expect Democrats to support you if you think different then them and don't expect Republicans to support you if you don't run as a Republican. |

State of the Goat 2009
It's been a momentous 12 months here at LiveJournal. We crossed a capital T at Ten years young. And, like most precocious pubescents, we celebrated turning double digits by publishing our first book! Needless to say, we've experienced some major changes, both inside and out. Before we recap, we'd like to thank you for bearing with us as we've struggled through ungainly growth spurts, identity pangs, and, yes, the occasional blemish. We hope you'll continue to stand by us: We're gaining wisdom with maturity.
Stuff you liked

- Back in February, we placed a call for entries for our ten-year anniversary anthology in
lj_turns10. In December (less than a year later!), we officially announced the publication of Live Journal: The First Decade. Featuring an inspired collection of writing, photographs, and artwork from the pages of LiveJournal history, the book has been selected by Blurb.com as a top staff pick! We are proud to have played host to so much talent over the years, and we thank our contributors for sharing their extraordinary work.
- We all love quirky surprises, but not when it comes to managing our account settings. This year we streamlined settings into one central account management area. No more sifting through FAQs to figure out how to control privacy settings, modify notifications, adjust mobile settings, or update contact information!
- Being users ourselves, we realize our own mothers couldn't find us on LiveJournal based on our usernames and userpics alone (*heaves heavy sigh of relief*). But since there are times when we actually want to be found, we created a search tool--Find Your Friends--to help locate people by email address (it's in the Friends drop-down menu).
- Spam counter-attack: The war against vicious malware and spambots reigns eternal, but we've been making serious inroads to ensure your online security. We've established new protocols, such as requiring email address validations. We've grown more savvy about ferreting out suspicious behavior. We've added features, like whitelisting, to help you protect your communities. Our valiant (i.e., overworked) spam avengers (a/k/a the LiveJournal ops team) are standing on red alert so you can sleep safely at night.
- After an intensive beta, we launched My Guests at the end of the year, which lets you see who's been hanging around your journal. A number of you have even discovered secret admirers (not all of whom are creepy)!
- Last, but by no means least, we want to thank our volunteers for providing invaluable support and feedback. Their Herculean efforts enable us to answer your questions more efficiently, identify spammers, reduce abuse, and deliver better features (through tireless testing). On behalf of the staff and the larger LiveJournal community, we are truly grateful for their diligence, intelligence, loyalty, and passion.
You got your fix
- We recently debugged a number of the oustanding issues with the rich text editor so your entries look great regardless of whether you know html. You can read more about text editors here.
- In response to user demand, we brought back international voice posting. Please note that this still needs more tweaking, and we are working on the one-minute cut-off issue. For more info on voice posting, read here.
- At long last, we revived TxtLJ with Verizon. For more info on TxtLJ, check out the FAQ.
Paid features you enjoyed

- In December, we introduced My Stats, which provides detailed data on who's been viewing your entries as well as statistics on commenting, RSS requests, friending history, and more. Despite a few early glitches, the response has been extremely favorable.
- This year, we launched and improved Notes (i.e., the feature formerly known as Alias), which lets you add private comments on friends and commenters (it's in the Profile drop-down menu). This way you won't be caught red-faced when you strain to remember details about that wonderful LiveJournal friend who sent you a birthday vGift. For more info, read the FAQ.
- When we first announced View friends pages by date, we thought it would be a quiet, minor enhancement. The rave reaction floored us, which made us all very happy. We gave it a fine tuning in February of 2009, so it's even better!
- How embarrassing! It appears pingbacks have gone back to the shop for service. We’ll keep you posted.
We didn't know just much you liked pingbacks until it went in for service. It's back and, judging by your irritation when it wasn't available, this is good news. FYI, pingbacks send instant notifications (via screened comments) whenever someone links to one of your entries on LiveJournal. For more info, read this entry in paidmembers or check out the FAQ.
Mixed reviews
- The search is still on. Some of you have reported getting more comprehensive results for keyword searches using the new Yandex search engine and like the ability to search within content categories (like entries or comments). Others have not been satisfied with the relevancy of search results. Please be patient. We're still tweaking this product.
- This past December, we wanted to try out a new holiday promotion. Given the crap economy, we decided to offer our Paid/Permanent users a stack of $10 coupons to send to Basic/Plus users for paid account upgrades. We hoped you would like it. And some of you did, but many were disappointed that we didn't offer Give More as well. We want to thank you so much for letting us know. Your input will help us plan better in the future. Just FYI, Paid/Permanent users can continue to send out coupons through January 15th. Coupons can be redeemed through January 31, 2010.
- We were pretty excited about Your Journal Your Money, which allows Paid/Permanent users to earn extra cash by displaying Google ads to Basic/Plus and logged out users. A number of you tried it. Some of you really like it. Others, not so much. (Just FYI, Paid/Permanent users who do not participate in this program will not view ads on journals. Participants will see ads on their own journal, but won't see them on other journals unless they specifically opt in.) For additional details, visit here.
- We relaunched m.livejournal.com, our mobile app. While it offers a nicer UI and enhanced functionality, some of you think we can do better on load times. Like most of us, it's a work in progress. You can customize your mobile settings here. For more info, please read the FAQ.
Missing Inaction
- We shudder to bring up the neon purple elephant squatting on our heads, but, yes, we didn't give you those a la carte userpics. We've been making radical improvements to our backend in order to support them. But no excuses. We know you want them. We cringe every time you mention them. We're sorry we dropped the ball on this, and we promise to do our best to get them to you in 2010.
Stumbling points
- Back in early August, we experienced outages related to a series of DDoS attacks. We are proud to report that we were down a total of one hour over the course of a few days. We thank our heroic ops guys for getting us up sooner and more consistently than any of our less fortunate social networking friends. We apologize for leaving you temporarily stranded.
- A couple of months back, we offered a free, unrestricted vGift, which induced a snowflake cookie avalanche. This resulted in backed up/delayed notifications, which, in turn, led us to reboot systems, rendering scrapbooks unavailable. It took a while to shovel free. Apologies for the inconvenience. We learned a valuable lesson that should keep us calamity-free in the future (fingers crossed while knocking on wood).
- That darn Best Buy ad. First off, we're sorry about the audio auto-play (we got it turned off as quickly as possible). While it's true that we'll continue to show this type of ad to accounts that normally see them (never to Paid/Permanent accounts), we'll make sure the sound defaults to off moving forward. We promise to do our very best to keep ads to a minimum on LiveJournal, while keeping a roof over Frank's head.
Full steam ahead!
As we plunge headfirst into the next decade, we want to take a moment to look back and thank all of our employees, both past and present, who have worked so hard to create our unique and magical universe. We couldn't have made it this far without you: Your contributions brighten our path everyday. We also want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of you. Whether you've been around for ten days or ten years, your humor, intelligence, talent, and creativity are what makes this the most vibrant global community on the Internet (the best place on the Web, in our humble opinion). Here's hoping that 2010 will be the greatest year yet! We thank you for joining us as we embark upon another glorious decade of LiveJournal history! |

Very naked brass monkeys
Wow, we got to minus 13 today and it's feeling like another chilly night tonight. I just got my hand stuck to the back door handle it was so cold! Crazy cold weather is okay if you're expecting it or prepared for a hard winter but it's pretty unusual for where I am in sunny Cheshire. Actually, sun has been quite rare here too when we were expecting it so that just proves everything is topsy turvy. Perhaps this is the start of a new ice age in which case we can switch off the freezer and save some money!! Current Mood: cold |

Because Snape didn't have enough birthdays in canon...
Okay, you guys? Saturday, January 9th, is Severus Snape's b'day, and while there are a number of events taking place online (not least amongst which is the Severus Big Bang, which'll be starting soon), I really want to draw your attention to the Party I'm participating in, i.e., severus_shorts. This Snape's birthday celebration has two parts. The one I've already prepared for is the Brief Fics Showcase, where already-written anonymous fics will be posted every day for a month. And then there's the 24 hour drawble and ficlet celebration. In the words of the mod: You are cordially invited to participate in Severus' Shorts' Brief Birthday Celebration! For the 24-hour period of 9 January 2010 (Eastern Time), please help us celebrate Severus Snape's 50th birthday by drawbling and drabbling upon the theme of one, some, or all of Severus' birthdays. No sign-ups or prompt-claiming is required (although prompts have been provided for your inspiration here. Official prompt-claiming is closed, but you may still use any of the prompts, even the claimed ones, so long as you give credit to the prompter in your drawble and drabble/ficlet headers).
To participate in the BBC, post your birthday-themed drawbles and drabbles/ficlets in your journals (as many works as you'd like to contribute), and then link to them in reply to the Brief Birthday Celebration post (note: which will show up on Snape's birthday). At the end of the BBC, a master list of celebrants' gifts to the Snape fandom will be posted in severus_shorts — and then the Brief Fics Showcase will begin!
A full description of both the BBC and BFS may be found in our community profile, and questions about severus_shorts may be directed to severus.shorts [at] gmail [dot] com. A quick birthday-themed sketch or drabble that you can post on Snape's birthday and then a month of fic to read. Come play! Fan Fiction Personality Test
Thank-you, bunney, for linking to this meme. Apparantly, I'm: The MindgamerEverything is possible, nothing is ever really over.Fanfiction is a creative outlet for you. You don't intentionally write it, it just happens. You find inspiration in several fandoms, but are not obsessed with only one.
You like to explore "what if" situations. What if this character had never made this very choice? What if this event had taken place sooner, never, elsewhere? What if these people had never met?
You are likely to write Alternative Universes, fan seasons or sequels and just follow your (sometimes pretty strange) plot bunnies. So far, so fair enough. The 'what if...' thing is very true, I think, though I think I'm at least equally 'True Fan' - i.e. wanting to keep things canon, and having my main interest in character exploration. Actually, I think most of the time when I indulge in mindgames it's explicitly to explore characterisation. I did say that I didn't have a problem with other people reading slash and mpreg, though, so perhaps that disqualifies me from canon aspirations in this meme-setters view! The meme results also include cute little graphs showing how your results compare with the maximum and everyone else's. 1) Mind Gamer 80%, higher than 83% of 'peers' (I'm not sure what they mean by 'peers', as I didn't fill in the statistical info at the end apart from my gender. But heck, it's not as if this is so very scientific!) ( 2) The True Fan 74%, higher than 65% of peers )Actually, I think all of this applies to me more than all of the 'Mind Gamer' description. ( 3) Barely FF 63%, higher than 70% of peers )*nods* I've enjoyed writing OCs, but my main inspiration has been existing [minor] characters. And I've not had or developed as many original ideas as I'd like. And some fanfic trends are really a mystery to me! I totally get why people are involved with fandom though. (*pets addictive personality quirk*) I do have an orginal idea in my head at the moment, but it's rather fuzzy - no where near the intensity of interaction I've felt with existing strong characters. And it's analogous to my creativity in other areas, come to that: in work situations, for example, I do tend to be better riffing off others' ideas and gaps in provision than coming up with something totally new. ( 4) Weirdo 57%, higher than 30% of peers )Yikes, 70% of people are more weird than I am? But fair enough: Lily/Squid was never my thing. ( 5) Slasher 49%, higher than 26% of peers )I score 49% on slash? Shows what slash-centric circles I hang out in, then - I'm sure I'd come out nearer 10% if compared against the writers I know! (I have written slash subtext, at least, and I do have a slashy plotbunny spinning wheels in my head, but as most of you know it's not exactly my focus.) ( 6) The Immature Kid 42%, higher than 47% of peers )Well, at least this one comes out at the bottom of the list, and under 50% both for peer comparison and absolute score. But were this in any way serious I'd be a bit piqued at idea that I'm less mature than 47% of fanfic writers! Methinks that the people who write most of the dross on ffnet a) weren't honest with either themselves or the test b) didn't understand the questions and/or c) didn't know how to click a box. I'd love to know how some of you score/would score yourselves against these categories. I'm not sure where darkfic would fit, for example - I assume somewhere between MindGamer and Slasher (at least in my corner of fandom). |

Emma Watson Leg Oddity ~ A Mystery Afoot
You may recall the case of the Ralph Lauren Model who was photoshopped to look like a bobble-head doll with an extremely skinny body. We Talked About That last year. Then there was Demi Moore, whose hips and thighs were semi-erased for the cover of "W" magazine according to the blog Boing-Boing. Now we have for your inspection a new Emma Watson photo done for the Burberry company in which she seems to have completely lost a limb, much like Mad-Eye Moody. Perhaps it walked away on its own carved chicken foot? On Buzz Feed you can vote whether this is "LOL" or "WTF."
When I saw this photo on Huffington Post, I first thought the boy beside her was Dan Radcliffe, but it turns out to be Emma's brother, Alex. That opens up a whole new can of bizarro considering the way they are rather provocatively posed (in my opinion). This reminds me of the poster for Order of the Phoenix in which Hermione's breasts were either enhanced or reduced, and her hair was made more flowing until it almost covered up Matt Lewis. All of this is unecessary. The comments on Huff Post were hilarious: Apparently Emma has just set up a landmine charity and is now dating Sir Paul McCartney. ~ Krek
Just before the picture they had an argument and she said " Don't make me put my foot up your a$$". ~ Hottinger
Forget the leg, her neck is smaller than her wrist! ~ Proud Bay Man
Invisibility cloak, duh ~ Midnightbreeze
Emma Watson has a leg up on things. ~ LMPE
Stop the speculation...obviously Lord Voldemort ate her leg. ~ orbs
Her leg is stuck in the wall and she is holding on to the guy for balance. ~ leifcatt

I promise this is my last Sherlock Holmes post
I continue to be interested in the reaction to the Sherlock Holmes movie, and I thought it would be instructive to arrange some quotes from the original material from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to see how it compares with the movie. I'm not sure if I'm going to lj-cut this or not, I'll have to see how long it is. Like I said before, I am not a big Sherlock fan. I haven't even read all the stories and novels. This is what I gathered from a day's research, mostly online, and it wasn't at all difficult to find out. That's kind of why I'm frustrated with reviewers who think they know what they're talking about. I'm not the only one. There was one additional thing I'd like to do: list some quotes from the movie that are lines from the story. But I'm afraid that's beyond my powers, I just don't know the source well enough to do some hunting, and besides I only saw the movie once. If someone else did it, I would be interested in reading it. ( Oh yeah, that's going under a cut ) Current Mood: angry |

FIC & ART Collab: "Personal Physician" (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17) Title: Personal Physician Author & Artist: mijan & lizardspotsFandom: Star Trek: Reboot Pairing: Kirk/McCoy Rating: NC-17, NWS art! Fic wordcount: ~6,000 Fic summary: The Enterprise is broken and helpless as she limps back from her battle with the Narada... and Jim finds himself broken and embarrassingly helpless, too. Bones can't fix everything, but as Jim discovers, he can fix some things surprisingly well. Artist Notes: So I signed up for happy_trekmas, got a pretty fun assignment (for fofomazuzu), and then uni took over my life and I ended up faffing around desparately, with no clue as to what I could draw. Then mijan helped me brainstorm and came up with this lovely art scenario... except the scenario was rather plotty and thus required a matching fic. Obviously. So she rather nonchalantly wrote an accompanying fic for my art right off the bat, and I promptly fell out of my chair with glee. :D Spontaneous collabs are the best!! Thank you x a million to my artbeta pals for their help. ♥ ( Personal Physician )My gift: I want to say a huge thank you to eeyore9990 who was revealed to be the author of my fabulous happy_trekmas gift " Deleted Files From The Captain's Log" (Kirk/Spock, NC-17) which I enjoyed immensely. :D Love! ♥ Current Mood: thankful |

VID: Farewell to Ten, the Doctor Who Remix (Blame It on the Pop)
So, what have I been doing since I watched the final David Tennant episode of Doctor Who? Vidding. And weeping a bit while rewatching. TITLE: Farewell to Ten, the Doctor Who Remix MUSIC: Blame it on the Pop, the 2009 Remix by DJ Earworm - all songs included in the remix are listed below RATING: PG GENRE: Mash-up. NOTES: In December of 2009, DJ Earworm released a remix of the top 25 songs in the US from 2009. I heard it the day before the last episode of Doctor Who starring David Tennant was set to air, and I knew from the first notes that I needed to do a vid about the Tenth Doctor set to this amazing mix of songs. It's my homage to Ten, his companions, his rivals and enemies. So many thanks to longtimegone for sitting with me through the editing process - you are invaluable! And thanks to wendy for sharing the song last week! I wouldn't have heard it otherwise, so I couldn't have done this without her! ( There's a wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey mash-up under the cut... )Download a dvd-quality version here or download an ipod-friendly version here. HP Beholder 2010 Heads Up!
Hi all... Just a quick heads up that the third round of hp_beholder is on the way. Sign-ups start Thursday, January 28, and I'd love to have as many of you participate as possible (including anybody who wasn't able to sign-up last year because they defaulted in 2008). You're welcome to share this information with your own f'lists. In fact, please do...the more, the merrier! Note: For background information relating to the creation of this Fic/Art Exchange, please see the original general information post, but don't trust that post for dates and updated rulesThis is NOT the sign-up post: Again...sign-ups begin Thursday, January 28, so you have plenty of time to read the instructions and decide what you're going to request. ( General Information )( Deadlines )( The List of characters from which at least one member of your primary pairing must be selected )( Sign-up Template )( Sample Sign-up )( Which Characters Can Be Excluded? )( Questions and Answers )Note for 2010: Because of the too-common downtime on IJ - like right this minute, which is why I'm cross-posting to my own journals from Dreamwidth instead of to the Beholder community - I've been considering moving the main posting venue for hp_beholder away from its original home base. Due to the nature of some of the art in this exchange, this Fest really can't take place on LJ ( note: this has been edited to make it more clear *g*), and while I'd like to use Dreamwidth, I'm concerned that there wouldn't be enough reader/viewer 'traffic.' If you have any thoughts, feel free to comment below (p.s., For anybody who's considering suggesting an Archive of Our Own, remember that they're not ready to host art yet) This entry was originally posted at http://bethbethbeth.dreamwidth.org/522822.html. | read comments at Dreamwidth. | How to use OpenID |

The Met Office was dead right
I have lived in Reading for over 25 years now and I have never seen snow like it. I was laughing with an online friend at 5:30 last night that the predicted 6 o'clock start looked unlikely and by the end of the news one hour later I looked outside to find almost an inch! By the time I went to bed it was at least 4 and this morning it is about 5 and a half + drifting in places . OK so not quite the 12-15 some forecasters are saying but then I am in a town and rarely get anything like the surrounding countryside and it hasn't stopped yet so who knows. I have had to clear the satellite dish of snow 5 times so far! Current Mood: cold |
